What to see
1. Pavia Cathedral
One of the largest cathedrals in Italy, with a magnificent dome also designed by Bramante. Worth a visit for its style and atmosphere.
2. Visconti Castle
A splendid 14th-century castle now home to the Civic Museums. Perfect for lovers of art, archaeology, and medieval architecture.
3. Covered Bridge over the Ticino River
A symbol of the city. A stroll across the bridge (and perhaps a gelato or aperitivo nearby) is a must.
4. University of Pavia and Historic Courtyards
One of the oldest universities in Europe (1361). The courtyards and historic halls are splendid, especially the Volta Courtyard.
5. Basilica of San Michele Maggiore
A masterpiece of Lombard Romanesque architecture and the coronation site of several medieval Italian kings.
6. Church of San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro
Home to the tomb of Saint Augustine; a place steeped in history and very scenic.
7. Certosa di Pavia
About 15 minutes from the city center, this is a Renaissance jewel unlike any other. A must-see.
