Palermo
Palermo is a coastal metropolis and the capital of the region of Sicily. After Naples, it is the largest city in Southern Italy, the largest in Sicily, and the thirtieth largest in Europe.
Colors, scents, magical atmospheres… this is what you find in Palermo, a city of Greek origin that later passed through Roman, Arab, Norman, and Swabian rule — all of whom left traces of their past. These treasures are evident in the Arab-Norman style of the historic center, which also features Baroque and Art Nouveau (Liberty) architecture. For these reasons and many more, Palermo is one of those cities that truly captures your heart.
Palermo, like many of Sicily’s tourist destinations, can be enjoyed in any season. Its climate makes it pleasant even in the colder months. The locals are used to enjoying sea views from almost every part of the city, and they typically start going to the beach in May, only stopping six months later in October.
The city offers moments of pure bliss through its flavors, colors, and aromas — all perfectly embodied in its historic markets, especially Vucciria and Ballarò. A stroll through the city’s characteristic neighborhoods and alleyways is an unforgettable experience that leaves a lasting impression on both the mind and heart of its visitors.
Just as the city’s culture and artistic heritage reflect the many influences of its historical past, so too has its traditional cuisine been shaped over the centuries — becoming one of the most appreciated in the world. Just consider that Palermo’s street food ranks fifth in the world and first in Europe!
