Ferrara

Ferrara is an elegant and peaceful art city, renowned for its extraordinary Renaissance heritage and recognized by UNESCO as a “City of the Renaissance.” The heart of the visit is its historic center, enclosed by impressive walls that can be explored on foot or by bicycle, offering a unique blend of nature and architecture. The city’s symbol is the Castello Estense, a medieval castle surrounded by a water-filled moat, once the residence of the Este dukes and now open to visitors with frescoed rooms and panoramic towers.

Walking through the center, you’ll encounter some of the most iconic landmarks: the Cattedrale di San Giorgio, featuring a mix of Romanesque and Gothic styles, and the Palazzo dei Diamanti, famous for its distinctive façade made of thousands of diamond-shaped marble blocks. Also very characteristic is Via delle Volte, a medieval street with arches and covered passages that reflects the city’s ancient mercantile past.

Ferrara also offers unique museums and cultural sites, such as the Palazzo Schifanoia, decorated with the famous “Hall of the Months” fresco cycle, and the Casa di Ludovico Ariosto, dedicated to the author of Orlando Furioso. The city’s charm lies in its relaxed pace and intimate atmosphere, making it perfect to explore slowly, ideally by bike, to fully enjoy every corner.

The surrounding area is equally rich in attractions: the Delta del Po is ideal for nature excursions among lagoons and birdwatching spots, while Comacchio enchants visitors with its canals and lagoon-like scenery. Also worth a visit is the Abbazia di Pomposa, a beautiful medieval abbey filled with history and remarkable frescoes, perfect for a day trip combining art and nature.
