Ancona
Ancona, the regional capital of the Marches, overlooks the waters of the Adriatic Sea from a promontory formed by the northern spurs of Mount Conero. It faces a gulf from which one can see Dalmatia and its maze of islands, as well as both the sunrise and sunset over the sea—a phenomenon made possible by the city’s distinctive elbow-shaped coastline. In fact, the name "Ancona" comes from the Greek word for "elbow."
A truly unique and special spectacle, for a city that hides many artistic treasures. Its location gives it a blend of continental and Mediterranean climates, which moderate the harshness of winter and the heat of summer, although snowfall and muggy weather—especially in summer—are not uncommon. It is during this season that the city reveals another of its prized attractions: its beaches. These are varied and very popular, ranging from high or low coastlines, to cliffs, rocks, pebbles, and sand, offering a continuous array of seaside options to suit every taste. Shaded woodlands almost touching the shore add to the scenic beauty offered by Mount Conero, creating views of great charm.
Whether immersed in its art-rich city center or wandering through its beaches and forests, a visit to Ancona is always a memorable experience, leading through poetic landscapes and satisfying those in search of beauty—both within and beyond the city.
