ROCCA DI ANGERA

Address: Via Rocca Castello, 2 - Angera - 21021 (VA)

The Rocca di Angera is a place of timeless charm that rises between the Lombardy shore of Lake Maggiore and the sky. The walls are characterised by swallowtail battlements that make it recognisable from afar, as you climb towards the rocky cliff on which it stands in a panoramic position.
Today, the castle houses historic rooms, towers and romantic courtyards, a museum and a period-style garden, but above all it is a rare example of a perfectly preserved medieval fortress.
The first records of the Rocca date back to 1066, when it was owned by the archbishops of Milan.
The turning point came in 1277 with the Battle of Desio and the victory of the Visconti family over the Della Torre family, celebrated in the remarkable frescoes in the Hall of Justice inside the castle. The Visconti family carried out major extension and decoration works. Vitaliano I Borromeo purchased the property in 1449 for 12,800 imperial lire and made it his residence. Together with the Rocca di Arona, on the opposite side of the lake, the fortress was one of the cornerstones of Lombardy's defensive system against incursions by Swiss and imperial troops. After a long dispute with the Sforza family, at the dawn of the 1500s, the Borromeo family became its permanent owners, and it remains so to this day.

Discover Varese

Varese is truly the “land of lakes”, with its territory dotted by numerous bodies of water. It is also known as the “garden city”, a name earned thanks to the many gardens that grace its historic villas. But Varese is also rich in artistic and cultural heritage: among its many artistic and architectural treasures, murals and frescoes painted on the façades of houses in some villages turn the city into a true open-air art gallery.

The city lies at the foot of the Sacro Monte mountain, part of the Campo dei Fiori range in the Varese Prealps, which is also home to an astronomical observatory and the Prealpine Geophysical Center.

The surrounding landscape is varied and lends itself to countless itineraries, thanks to its diverse geography—diversity that is also reflected in the richness of its gastronomic offerings. From cheeses to cured meats, from local wines and honey to lake fish and game, Varese’s culinary scene is full of local excellence. Don't miss specialties like Cantello asparagus, Formaggella del Luinese DOP, and ravioli stuffed with perch, river shrimp, and wild mint. Whether in the city center or along the lakeshore, you’ll find plenty of typical trattorias and country inns where you can savor authentic traditional cuisine.
